Hi, i was wondering if there was any available information on when accredation is going to be achieved? Thanks.
Thanks for asking. Currently we are quite a ways off of accreditation. I think we had high hopes that we would achieve this quickly but it doesn’t seem to be the case right now. Realistically it will be another year, or even more, before we meet the milestones necessary to actually apply.
Now that being said, I think it is important to recognize WHAT accreditation is. In essense, accreditation means that you can move credits from one school to another. In our case, there really AREN’T any schools that have comparable credits. So it really wouldn’t make any difference for most people.
The other reason that people want accreditation is so that they can take out student loans, which is understandable. But I would say that, first, you have realize that an entire degree with us is only $5k, about the cost of a 10 year old car! If a person really wants an enducation, then it seems to me that it makes more sense to pay for the education as you go, at no interest, than to pay for it later at interest. Plus, paying for it now adds an extra incentive to do well and stay focused. Currently, you can get a degree for as little as $35 a week, which is a reasonable amount to come up with especially since you can realistically work a job and still get a degree from IMU.
The last reason that people want accreditation is for credibility. I get that and understand. But that being said, we have done everything that we can to model IMU after a mainstream online university. Our instructors are some of the best in the world, often times the person who actually WROTE THE BOOK on a given topic, which is something even Harvard doesn’t offer. We have top of the line Course Management Software which is used at places like MIT and the University of Michigan (one of the largest universities in the world). So considering we have only been around for a couple of years, I’d say we have quite a bit to offer.
The other side of this is that there are many benefits to being unaccredited. For instance, we have a lof of flexibilty. We can accept students who haven’t yet completed an undergraduate degree, assuming they can handle the course load. For many in this industry, who simply couldn’t allign themselves with mainstream education, this is a perfect solution. Plus, we can be flexible on class choices, on accepting credits from other universities, etc. So all of this has to be taken into consideration when asking the question, “are you accredited.”
I hope this helps!
