Creating Your Quizzes in Aiken Format

The Aiken format is a very simple way of creating multiple choice questions using a clear human-readable format.

  • The question must be all on one line.
  • Each answer must start with a single uppercase letter, followed by a period ‘.’ or a bracket ‘)’, then a space.
  • The answer line must immediately follow, starting with “ANSWER: ” (NOTE the space after the colon) and then giving the appropriate letter.
  • The answer letters (A,B,C etc.) and the word “ANSWER” must be capitalized as shown, otherwise the import will fail.

NOTE: This format only works for multiple choice questions with only one answer. If your question has more than one answer (for example, “Select all that apply”) you must enter the question in manually.  You can learn how to do that in your IMU 101 course in our online classroom.

Here is an example of the format:

What is the correct answer to this question?
A. It could be this one.
B. Maybe it’s this answer.
C. Possibly this one.
D. Definitely this one!
ANSWER: D

True or False: Moodle is used for IMU’s online classroom.
A. True
B. False
ANSWER: A

Once you have created the quiz, save it as a .TXT file.  You are free to place a “title” at the top of the document on the first line (like CON501 Quiz 1, ORD 501 Quiz 3)  and it will still import properly. Download an example of a test in Aiken format from the Instructor Resources page.
